My wife and I are on the way to Vegas. We were, shall we say, flying a bit faster than necessary? We get pulled over by the Highway Patrol. Generally, not good news, even for a cop. They have been known to sign us up just like anyone else. In any case, the kind gentleman comes to the window, and I blurt out, "I'm a cop, but I am not armed." Stupid. His reply, "Then why tell me you are a cop?" Hmmmm, good question...probably because I don't want a 500 dollar ticket and to lose my new ...

I am working a two-man car with a good friend. That is when this job is at its best. Good buddy, hot coffee, laughing all night. I can't believe they pay us for those nights. We get sent to an old lady's mansion. Really interesting old place in the hills. She says someone broke in and robbed her. The place looks pristine, and we are wondering what she is talking about. She walks us to the safe in the bedroom. "Right this way, young men..." Once inside she shows us about $500,000 wo ...

I was working with a partner from the police academy as a Z car ... LAPD speak for a crime supression car. We heard the call of "shots heard in the area, Harvard and Pico." Being the hard chargers we are, we drove to the area to see two individuals running away from the location. We jammed them, but they apparently were running from the gun fire. As we were lawfully detaining them per Terry v. Ohio, we heard shouting and more shots a few houses South of us. We immediately went to the scene a ...

Gotta love the paparazzi. I was petting a celebrity's dog (working patrol in a ritzy area...nice!) The photographer is easily 1000 yards away. We never saw him. The next month in a tabloid, there is the blurry picture of my petting the cute little mutt. The headline reads, "LAPD OFFICER CONFISCATES [CELEBRITY]'S DOG!" It makes me wonder; what percentage of all the crap we read in the press is true or not true? ...

This is more of a human story than a cop story, but I hope it still goes with the idea there on the site. I had the honor (I would not say pleasure) of attending the funeral of an officer who committed suicide. Granted this is not being killed on duty, but I have to think the stress of being a cop takes its toll. Anyway all the cops in the front row were crying. I thought it was interesting, these men we think of as solid as a rock, in their gleaming uniforms which were polished to the hil ...
