Working mid-pm shift (6pm to 2:45am). My partner and I received a radio call of a, "Violent Female Mental, subject is armed with a pair of scissors and assualting passers-by..." While en-route, my partner and I formulated a tactical plan, I would be contact with the taser, he would be cover with the gun. We arrived and walked up on her, she was actually assaulting people with a pair of scissors. This was, of course, after she sliced her own wrists and was bleeding profusely all over herself. Before I could even speak to her, she turned and said, "you're not gonna tase me!" and then ran into the middle of an 8-lane highway. My partner and I followed. She finally stopped in the middle of the highway, pretty much on the double-yellow lines and turned around, scissors in hand and shouted, "go ahead! Tase me!" This was rush-hour and traffic was at a stand-still and encircled us.

She then began her advance on me, scissors in hand. When she reached about 15 feet away, I fired the taser. One of the two darts missed, thus not completing the circuit. She looked down at the other dart, embedded into her chest and said, "I can't believe you tased me!" Then she began a quick advance toward me intent on stabbing me with the scissors. Thank god I reloaded while she stopped to ponder her new barbed jewelry. I then shot her a second time. This time, one in the chest and, you guessed it, one in the vagina. I pressed the trigger and she moaned and fell to the ground. My partner and I rushed to her side to disarm her and render aid. I asked if she was okay and she responded, "I have to pee." Another human NOT killed because of good tactics and sound judgement. You're welcome, sweetheart.

Roll calls can be fun. The subject of roll call training can vary anywhere from off-duty conduct to end-of-pursuit tactics. I love it when you get a sergeant who doesn't have a clue about anything get up and give roll call training, especially when the topic is, "Physical Fitness and Wellness." This sergeant, a male who obviously lacked any higher education, stood up for about 15 minutes and gave roll call training on the health benefits of cranberry juice to women. Yes, he mentioned vaginas and urinary tracts and the like. It's been about 9 years and I am still embarrassed for him.

Assigned to traffic division as a loan. While we were getting prepared for roll call, the PA system crackled and a male voice said, "motor officer needs assistance at the Mission, violent male mental assaulting the police..." Everyone literally got up from their seats and ran out of the room. Response time was unprecedented since the Mission is directly across the street from the police station. As soon as I arrived, I saw that a naked man had somehow managed to crawl up the 12 foot wrought-iron gates and had clung himself to them. Of course, he refused to come down.

Several dozen officers were now in a quandry. I had never seen so many officers standing around in amazement with no solution to a problem. I am sure the fire department must have come up. What came next I would never see again in my years as a police officer. Two frustrated 7 foot tall motor officers reached up and grabbed onto each of the naked man's legs and began to pull. The naked man evenutally lost his grip and fell flat onto the pavement. They searched for a black and white to put him in and, of course, mine was chosen. I hand-cuffed him behind his naked back and placed him in the back seat of my caged black and white. I even buckled His Nakedness in. I shut the door, turned to talk to my partner and we discussed options. I then heard a sergeant shout, "who put him in the back seat like this!?!" I turned and saw the subject, out of his seatbelt, handcuffed hands in front of him and he was mastrubating. Enough said.

It was midnight and pouring cats and dogs. My partner and I responded to a felled tree on a major boulevard. This tree had fallen across all the west-bound lanes so we quickly turned one of the east-bound lanes into a westbound with traffic cones. Everything went smoothly, except that we were a little cranky from the continuous soaking we received. After about an hour of directing traffic, a woman slowed down and cracked her window and asked me, "Excuse me, officer, what happened here?" I turned and looked at the huge tree that had obviously fallen onto the roadway, no doubt due to the loosened soil and replied, "Ma'am, a UFO crash landed here, I'm gonna have to ask you to move on." She replied, "REALLY???" People on the west-side are so gullible.

I simply cannot believe this one, so I had to write it down: I stopped a guy, at least 80 years old, for speeding, ON RADAR for god sakes. He was going 30 over the limit no problem. The old coot (a lawyer no less) gets out of the car and challenges us to fight (two cops in their late 20's!). Talk about having a problem with the police. We talked him down from an actual fight, but he assured us he could "take us" if he wanted to. Sign here, pal...

Absolutely true story. A sergeant over at LAPD watched this criminal, who was evading the police, hit the center divider. His car lights up in flames (poetic?) and the sarge pulls this guy out, as the car blows up. Only we could have to go from catcher to saver in 2 seconds flat. Good work sarge.

Three of us responded to an unknown trouble radio call. We found a male quite upset. He tells us that his wife is "a little off" and is around the corner with a weapon. We get to the carport next door and find a woman with a fireplace poker and 4 steak knives taped to the end of it. She is jabbing at nothing and talking to herself. Probably could have killed or at least tasered the suspect. Instead we talked her down. Quite a bit of ribbing from the troops, but better to negotiate for 5 minutes than shoot her I suppose.

I love lawyers. I really really do. How come doctors don't scream "I'm a doctor" when you do a traffic stop on them? Teachers? Firemen? Only lawyers.

Briefing training was about dealing with mentally ill perpetrators. I understand they are sick, but if they have a gun in their hand, doesn't the sick make them MORE dangerous? They seemed to be saying we should be shrinks out there, not cops. Also, how do we know what is the deal in someone's head?
